Detectives probing the rape of a teenage girl near a war memorial have released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to.

Police have released CCTV of a man they want to speak to after the 16-year-old was raped in a memorial park in Liverpool city centre. Officers were called to St Johns Gardens in the city in the early hours of Friday where the girl reported being sexually attacked by an unknown man.

Merseyside Police detectives are now trying to trace a man in a dark jacket and grey trousers after the rape, reported shortly before 2am. They said they wanted to trace the man "as a matter of urgency". The girl, they added, was currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Carla Cross said: “Our enquiries remain ongoing and we have issued CCTV images of a man we believe could assist us. We would encourage the man, or anyone who recognises him, to contact us as a matter of urgency. It is important that people who live, work and socialise in Liverpool city centre feel safe and we will hope that our high visibility patrols will assist with that. I would always encourage members of the public to engage with our officers and report any suspicious or unusual activity so we can take immediate action.”

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or call 101. Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 24000333447.
