Destiny is defeat, PM

Putting himself and the Tory Party before the interests of Britain by delaying a general election shows that Rishi Sunak is terrified of the verdict of the people. He knows the country is yearning for a fresh start, with Keir Starmer and his Labour Party widely viewed as the alternative government the UK needs.

That is why Sunak is postponing the general election, fearing a humiliating defeat. As Labour’s Health Secretary-in-waiting Wes Streeting put it, the PM will need to be dragged out of office by his fingertips. The bloody nose Sunak is tipped to receive in Thursday’s local polls is likely to trigger yet more Tory in-fighting, parts of that fading party mistakenly believing that installing a sixth Conservative in eight years in Downing Street would save them from a mauling. Everybody able to vote should vote, and vote wisely. It is their judgment that worries Sunak, a Prime Minister continuing to run away from the ultimate political destiny day.

Grim warning

Pressure is mounting on Benjamin Netanyahu as he is rocked by mass protests by Israelis demanding his resignation and the world warns that attacking Rafah would worsen an already terrible humanitarian crisis in Gaza. If he ignores the pleas of the US, never mind the United Nations, UK or other traditional allies of Israel, the embattled Netanyahu will damage his own state and strain international relationships. To pursue the leaders of Hamas is legitimate after they unleashed terror on October 7. Slaughtering thousands of Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza is not legitimate. Many believe it is a war crime.
