Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez furiously confronted his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya in a heated press conference ahead of his world title defence against Jaime Munguia this weekend.

Canelo, the reigning undisputed super-middleweight champion, was promoted by ring legend De La Hoya from 2010 as he developed into one of the sport’s biggest stars.

The two split acrimoniously in 2020, frequently trading insults in media interviews in recent years since then.

Heading into fight week, De La Hoya promised he would ‘not hold back’ in going in on his former fighter and delivered on that promise in Wednesday’s press conference.

‘There were times when my work was not my priority based on my mental health which I had neglected for so long,’ De La  Hoya said on stage, with Canelo and his team sat to his right.

‘But that doesn’t change the fact that Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez, period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name. And it’s mine. So put some f*****g respect on it.’

As De La Hoya turned his focus to his fighter Munguia, a furious Canelo began addressing his former promoter in Spanish. Growing more agitated, he rose from his chair to approach De La Hoya with security forced to separate the pair.

Getting his turn on the microphone, Canelo keep the row going, ripping into the former six-weight world champion.

He said of De La Hoya: ‘He is a f*****g asshole. He tried to keep the attention for him, not Munguia.

‘He is a f*****g asshole. He steals [from] his fighters. That’s what he does. F*****g p***y. Motherf****r.’

Canelo puts his IBF, WBO, WBC and WBA super-middleweight titles on the line in Las Vegas on Saturday, seeking to defend his undisputed crown for the fourth time.

His fellow Mexican Munguia is undefeated in 43 fights.
